UBC Let's Talk Science strives to improve science, technology, engineering and mathematics literacy through the outreach efforts of members of the research community at the University of British Columbia. Our volunteers work with youth from elementary and secondary schools to ignite science excitement and share their knowledge with eager young minds.
Film Canister Rockets
Want to bring some explosions to your classroom? Using alka-seltzer tablets and water, a simple chemical reaction releases carbon dioxide, which builds up in a sealed film canister. As the pressure builds up, the lid of the canister flies off. This activity can explore chemical reactions, physics of motion, engineering design of launch pads, or creative arts as students turn their film canisters into rockets.
