Geneskool Summer Program Assistant

Genome BC is hiring for their summer program, Geneskool!

Description of role:

The Genome BC Geneskool Summer Science Program for Teens runs 20-24 Aug, 2018 at Capilano University in North Vancouver. Throughout the week, participants aged 14-18 utilize real-world scientific techniques to solve a crime. Reporting to the Summer Program Director, the successful candidate will be a lead facilitator of workshops during camp and support the Summer Program Director in other duties (more details below). This position is best suited to someone with a strong background in genetics and a demonstrated passion for youth education. Previous experience with the Genome BC Geneskool program is preferred.

Duties and responsibilities as Summer Program Assistant:

● Lead facilitation of Genome BC Geneskool Summer Program workshops on: DNA

structure & function, pedigrees, blood spatter analysis, fingerprinting, karyotyping,

genetic testing, karyotyping and bioethics.

● Assist the Summer Program Director with training and supervision of volunteers.

● Delegate facilitation responsibilities and other tasks to volunteers, as appropriate.

● Assist the Summer Program Director with development and delivery of camp

activities, ensuring that there is a compelling narrative for participants. Strike a

balance between rich learning outcomes and entertainment value.

● Assist in preparing materials and supplies needed for the program.

● Assist the Summer Program Director in recruitment, training and supervision of

volunteer instructors.

● Work with the Summer Program Director to create a written report evaluating the

summer program from all perspectives (organizer, volunteers, students, parents).

Terms:

$15/hour for a maximum of 80 hours. Positions potentially starts in July. Position is part-time except full-time during Aug 20-24.
