Volunteers and Teachers Discover New Activities
November 25, 2009

Activity Workshop Vancouver teachers and Let's Talk Science volunteers attended an Activity Workshop to get ideas for classroom science activities. The workshop highlighted how easy-to-find and everyday objects can be used to introduce science concepts to a young audience: model cells and DNA can be crafted with candy, lava lamps can be made from an oil and water mixture, and items can be made to "hover" using magnets. Gooey slime, always a favourite with kids (of all ages) can be made with glue, food colouring, and borax. Activities demonstrating fuel cell and neuroscience concepts were also presented.

As a bonus, Isabel Deslauriers, our special guest from the National Let's Talk Science Office showed-off some of our ready-to-use kits: Ancient Machines, Entrepreneurial Science, and Five Senses.

And to top it off, visitors also got the chance to make model candy DNA and eat it too – Yum!

Nearly 300 kids and parents dropped by the event over the weekend.

Special thanks goes to all volunteers who came out: Mehrdad Bokharaei, Tanis Gieselman, Alice Zhang, Ardalan Ahmadi, Denil Wickrama, Angela Burleigh, Natasha Holmes, Andy Moll, and Heidrun Spohr!!!
