Inspiring Discovery
UBC Let's Talk Science strives to improve science, technology, engineering and mathematics literacy through the outreach efforts of members of the research community at the University of British Columbia. Our volunteers work with youth from elementary and secondary schools to ignite science excitement and share their knowledge with eager young minds.
Infinite Opportunities and Careers Using Science (InFOCUS)
Similar to the Teacher Partnership Program, the InFOCUS program pairs Let's Talk Science volunteers with teachers in the Vancouver community. However, this program is geared towards Grade 11 high school students. We have developed a series of activities that complement the Grade 11 curriculum in biology, chemistry and physics. As an added twist, each activity is designed to promote careers that utilize the skills and content being taught to the students with the goal of increasing their scientific literacy, awareness of occupations in science, and mentorship opportunities. The resources for each of the activity workshops include manuals and activity kits for high school students to perform hands-on scientific experiments under the guidance of UBC graduate students. UBC students can work closely with high school teachers to set dates for the school visits and deliver these workshops from September to May each year. InFOCUS is a valuable opportunity to gain outreach and teaching experience at a high school level, as well as get constructive feedback from teachers.
If you would like more information regarding this program or if you are a Grade 11 teacher who is interested in signing up your class for the program, please contact the coordinator at partnership@ubclts.com.
